De-clutter Your Makeup Dresser

Post on May 06, 2016 | SOGO
Makeup – the only reason why we need 15 lipsticks, two foundation shades (Kim Kardashian contouring, anyone?), and palettes after palettes of eye shadow. But if you find yourself drowning in a pile of cosmetics, it’s time to simplify and edit your makeup stash. Here’s how:

1. ELIMINATE PRODUCTS THAT DON’T REFLECT YOUR CURRENT STYLE
Your beauty style would have evolved over the years and the same shimmery blue eyeshadow you adored three years ago probably won’t be your go-to colour anymore. In short, keep products that reflect your current makeup style and say goodbye to those that you don’t see yourself using in the near future.

2. PART WAYS WITH PRODUCTS THAT YOU WOULD NOT PURCHASE AGAIN
If there’s a particular blush or lipstick that you can never decide what to do with, it’s time to bid adieu. You might like it, but chances are, you haven’t worn it in a long while. Just ask yourself this: “If I knew what I know now, would I buy this product again if I was back at the store?” If the answer is no, let it go.

3. GET RID OF DUPLICATE PRODUCTS
Let’s face it…most of us are guilty of buying multiple bottles of foundation or eye shadow when we don’t really need it. If you’re a lipstick addict, you’re most likely to own three identical red lipsticks. Pick out the one with the best formula or the one that you reach for the most, and eliminate the others. Same goes for other multiple products that serve the same purpose meaning - multiple bottles of hairspray or bottles of foundation with the same coverage and finish. Chances are, you gravitate towards one or two the most and barely touch the others, so try to narrow down products to your top picks.

4. DON’T HOARD EXPIRED PRODUCTS
It goes without saying, if a product looks different or smells funky, trash it! Here’s a quick list of makeup’s shelf life:-
a) Mascara, makeup sponges: 6 months
b) Lipstick, lip liner, brow pencil, eyeliner (liquid/pencil): 1 year
c) Blush, eye shadow, liquid foundation, powder, concealer: 2 years
Skincare in general will have an expiry date on the packaging that reads something like ‘24M’. As for makeup brushes, it’ll be wise to wash them every few weeks to keep bacteria from breeding – YUCK!

5. TO TOSS, GIFT OR DONATE?
This easy run-down should do the trick:-
a) Toss: This is a given – products that have expired or gone bad!
b) Gift: Products in good, usable condition that you might not use, why not give it to your friends or family that will love and appreciate?
c) Donate: Plenty of women’s shelters accept gently used products; just give them a call and enquire what their policy is.

So get moving and clear those clutter away!
